Building a Real Relationship with God: Not Religion, But Connection

When we stop trying to earn love and just receive it, that’s when we begin to taste real freedom.

Introduction

So many of us grow up hearing about God, maybe even going to church, but still feel disconnected. You can do all the “right” things and still miss the heart of it. Why? Because it’s not about rules—it’s about relationship. A bold relationship with God changes everything.

Letting Go of Religion to Find Relationship

There’s a big difference between religion and a relationship with God. Religion says, “Try harder. Be better.” But relationship says, “Come as you are.” When we stop trying to earn love and just receive it, that’s when we begin to taste real freedom.

Jesus didn’t come to start a religion; He came to reconcile us back to the Father. That means you can talk to Him in the car, cry with Him in the shower, and laugh with Him on your best days. It’s personal, not performance.

How to Start a Real Relationship with God

Starting a relationship with God begins with honesty. Just be real. Tell Him your doubts, your fears, your frustrations. He can handle it all.
Here are a few simple steps to help you connect:

  • Talk to Him: Prayer isn’t fancy talk—it’s real talk.

  • Listen: Open your heart to hear Him through the Bible, quiet moments, or even in nature.

  • Trust: Let go of trying to fix everything and give Him space to move.

Conclusion

Your relationship with God isn’t about being perfect—it’s about being present. He wants the real you. No mask. No script. Just heart. Start small, start messy, but just start. The connection you crave is already waiting for you.
